We just got this email from one of our Child Advocates, Nadine:
“I just watched the MAST (Haiti’s Ministry of Social Services) general director make an unprecedented statement against restavek in Haiti. He said we cannot continue to accept this issue. He said that they are in the process of doing research on street kids, and after just going through 25% of these children, 76.5% of them came from domestic violence (restavek). He said that it is a priority for us to end this slavery system, based on the history of this country. He also thanked the basics organizations and NGO’s that are working on the field against restavek.”
We are pleased to know that the government in Haiti will be looking closer at this issue!
